FAQ-Nisku Overhead Doors Edmonton

Question:
What is the "Standard White Door"?
Answer:   The most common type of garage door that we get asked about is a “Standard White Door”. This is the style of garage door you see most often in your neighbourhoods. Even with a “Standard White Door” there are so many options available with different insulation values, panel and window configurations, and adding hardware accessories. But if you’re looking for something unique and more custom for your home and really want to stand out amongst the rows of houses, check out our “Decorative” designer doors and take advantage of the possibilities.

Question:
How large should the opening for the garage door be?
Answer:   If you would like your door to work most efficiently, the opening should be framed about a ¼" smaller than the door. This is known as a jamb lap and it will help seal the door better than using an opening the same size as the door. The jamb lap will cover a small portion of the door face, and once the weather stops are installed, it will help seal out the elements. This applies for both commercial and residential doors.

Question:
Do I need the floor in place to install the door(s)?
Answer: At Nisku Overhead Doors Edmonton, our policy is that a floor is required. However, no, you don’t need a floor to install a garage door. If installing on an unfinished surface it must be level, compacted, and safe.

Question: Can the door be painted?
Answer: Yes, the door can be painted, but it is not necessary with steel doors. It should be noted that painting your door will often negate the warranty.

Question: What is the warranty for a newly installed door?
Answer: The standard warranty for Nisku Overhead Doors Edmonton’s products is one year on materials and labour. Some of our products come with extended warranties, while others are protected by limited lifetime warranties.

Question: Can windows be added later?
Answer: Yes, Nisku Overhead Doors Edmonton is happy to add decorative glass windows after your overhead door has been installed. There is, however, an additional charge for windows, and their installation.

Question: How much room do I need above the opening to make everything work correctly?
Answer: For a standard commercial application, you will need 20". A standard residential application requires 12".

Question: What does R-Value mean? (ie: R-11, R-16, etc.)
Answer:   R-Value indicates the insulation value of the door. Your garage door is basically an entire wall in your garage.  If your garage is insulatedthen having a low insulation (R) value garage door would undermine your efforts to keep in the heat for cold days or to keep it cool during the hot days. We recommend having a minimum R-1door for insulated garages or heated garages and prefer R-14 or R-16, especially if you spend a great deal of time in your garage or if there is a bedroom or other room above the garage that you want the temperature to be consistent with the rest of your house.
